Consolidated Activities for Library Week 

Library – Sicelo (16th March 2018)

Activity – Spelling quizz

Purpose – the main objective of the activity is to enhance thinking and improve spelling capabilities. The quizz itself will involve 20 learners who will form groups of five. The learners will be presented with library terms which they are expected to spell out in written form. Each team that gets the words correctly proceeds to the second round and so forth.  The quizz will not only help the learners will reading and spelling traits but also enforce team work. 

Library – De Deur (19th March 2018)

Activity- Puppet show

Purpose- The main idea behind the puppet show is to help develop the necessary skills in a child’s life. It enables them to live through real life obstacles. Puppet shows can enhance a child’s imagination and begin to be literate.

Library – Meyerton (19th March 2018)

Activity – Story boss: Story telling competition

Purpose - The purpose of the activity is to cultivate a reading culture, promote a love for books and create an environment where learners feel at home amongst books. It will also bring about the need to know more. This activity will have learners eager to tell their best stories yet.

Activity- Getting started with the overdrive app

Purpose- OverDrive is a free service offered by your library or school that lets you borrow digital content (like eBooks and audiobooks) anytime, anywhere. By enforcing this activity we are introducing a new tech era to the masses. The activity will involve an introduction to people about overdrive and emphasise that it can be used if one has a library card, because it is such a great innovation, it will sure bring in more users to register to use libraries.

Library- Henley on Klip (20th March 2018)

Activity- Library Orientation: Library book hunt

Purpose – This activity is one to have the learners all excited, it entails a brief library orientation which can help the learners to be familiar with the library prior to the hunt. The learners are to locate hidden books within the library! The winner will have the honour of reading a little short story to the rest of the learners.

Library- Randvaal (20th March 2018)

Activity- Expressive painting on fabric

Purpose- There are many ways to express art and craft. This activity will be the main way to express libraries celebrating 200 years. The painting will be all about the library week theme which is “Libraries: The heart of the community”


Library- Lakeside (22nd March 2018)

Activity- Library Literacy: Dewey Marathon

Purpose – This activity is all about the library’s shelving set up! The learners are to be given a brief library orientation to familiarize themselves with the shelving system in libraries, the learners will be given dewey decimal class numbers to locate certain books in the books, the learner with most findings wins! This activity will assist the learners with number coordination.


Library- Bantu Bonke (23rd March 2018)

Activity- Creating my own little book

Purpose- The purpose of this activity is to allow the child’s imagination to run wild by allowing them to create their own stories in a form of a book. It enables the little ones to be open minded and explore their creative sides. Constructing of words can help the children to develop spelling and writing skills

 Overdrive e-lending service is a service where Gauteng library patrons access the library collection and issue books out to themselves without even visiting the library but through using their library membership to access the virtual library. 

E-Britannica Library


E-Britannica is an online library service that caters for juniors, students and adults. It’s a service that has long been existing with reference, e-books, articles, images, videos.

SA Media Sabinet

SA media

 SA Media is a Sabinet online database that provides articles that were previously published on the newspapers to the subscribers. It’s a reference database that archives old newspaper articles.
